Welcome to 40plussports and best wishes for the new year. This site is designed to encourage, inform, and entertain those over 40 who are contemplating arising from their couches and competing; or those who are already deeply committed to sports competition; or those who are somewhere in between -- the sometime weekend warrior.
WHAT'S NEW ON THE SITE
Before talking about the latest changes in the website I want to relay a couple of news items about changes in two sports that will certainly affect adults competing in those sports. First is the announcement that FISA (The World Rowing Federation) is dropping the lightweight men's eights from the World's program. The reason is the lack of participation in the event by countries (Over the past three years, there have been fewer than seven entries in the World Championships). While this is a very tough decision for those athletes who have trained for this event over the past year, it is also a reminder that the lifeblood of sports competition is participation. Poor participation and the sport disappears.
A second reminder is the decision by US Squash to end the Hardball National Championships after this year. The world wide popularity of softball squash, the adoption of the softball by the U.S. has meant a slow, lingering death for this version of squash. Like, plants, animals, and humans, sports evolve and change. Oftentimes sad, but inevitable.
 NEW LIFE
I've taken the past year off the website to start a new book (but still have a long way to go). But I've decided to spend more time on "The Aging Athlete", "Data Analysis", and "Research." this year. I'll try to post something at least every two weeks and notify you here. I have, finally, posted (1) The 2016 national championship calendar for each sport, (2) A 2016 calendar for all sports (3) A summary of the 2015 national championships for each sport, and (4) Tables for the 2015 national championships for each sport, including the national champion and the number of competitors in each competitive class. As always, I will rely on my faithful readers to notify me of corrections or omissions.
I've also posted a very brief summary of a recent article from The Journal of Aging and Physical Activity
in the Research section of this website.
• USA Diving has moved its location in Indianapolis, IN. See "Diving - 2016" under Sports for the new address.
• I have just posted a brief analysis of participation in racquet sports in the "Data Analysis" section of this website. Just click "Data Analysis" and scroll down to the bottom of the page to read this and other articles.
WHAT'S ON THE SITE
For those of you who are new to the site, here is an overview of the six sections
1) The Aging Athlete
-- My reflections on growing older as I compete in various sports.
2) Data Analysis
-- A page devoted to an examination of the data contained on the sports pages of this site. You'll find an Introduction to the Data
. At the bottom of the page you can access an article on Female Competitors in 2009 National Championships
and an article on Competitors over 70 in 2009 National Championships
-- A summary of articles and research on aging and sport performance that I have found provocative and informative.
-- A page for each of 27 sports which present a schedule for upcoming national championships, a list of the national champions in each sport, a list of the number of "competitors" in each event, and a summary table. Note: These tables are ONLY for competitors in the over-40 age group classes.
5) Buy the Book
-- A blatant commercial appeal to purchase the book on which this website is based.
6) Links and Resources
-- Interesting and relevant websites, books, DVDs, and other media.
