Welcome to 40plussports.com
Welcome to 40plussports. This site is designed to encourage, inform, and entertain those over 40 who are contemplating arising from their couches and competing; or those who are already deeply committed to sports competition; or those who are somewhere in between -- the sometime weekend warrior.

It's been a year since my last posting and while I regret the long hiatus I haven't been neglecting the site altogether. I have begun posting the results of the 2016 national championships. Look for those sport labeled "2017." I have also been interviewing Masters Athletes for my book (which still has a long way to go) and wrote a short article for the March/April 2016 issues of "North American Orienteering."

And I have been competing, although because of illness and family responsibilities I have fallen far short of my competition goals for 2016 (There will be more about this in The Aging Athlete). Briefly, I have raced in about a dozen marathon kayak races, more than a dozen tennis matches (including two USTA age-group tournaments and various USTA team competitions), half a dozen orienteering meets, and several other hybrid competitions.

I've also been reading and here are a few recommendations, if you are inclined to read about sports as well as participate:

1. String Theory by David Foster Wallace. The most insightful essays on tennis since John McPhee's "Levels of the Game."

2. Faster Higher Stronger by Mark McCulsky. About the latest contributions of science to sports

3. "Holding the T" by Tad Friend. A squash player's journey into midlife (Jan. 18, 2016 New Yorker)

4. Several articles in the summer 2016 issues of "XC World Digest", the newsletter of American Cross Country Skiers. These newsletters regularly provide useful essays on endurance sports, obviously focused on cross country skiing.

Now that my kayaking and orienteering seasons are drawing to a close, I will try to be better about freshening up the site. In the meantime, please let me know if you have any questions, stories, or complaints.

WHAT'S ON THE SITE
For those of you who are new to the site, here is an overview of the six sections

1) The Aging Athlete -- My reflections on growing older as I compete in various sports.

2) Data Analysis -- A page devoted to an examination of the data contained on the sports pages of this site. You'll find an Introduction to the Data . At the bottom of the page you can access an article on Female Competitors in 2009 National Championships and an article on Competitors over 70 in 2009 National Championships .

3) Research -- A summary of articles and research on aging and sport performance that I have found provocative and informative.

4) Sports -- A page for each of 27 sports which present a schedule for upcoming national championships, a list of the national champions in each sport, a list of the number of "competitors" in each event, and a summary table. Note: These tables are ONLY for competitors in the over-40 age group classes.

5) Buy the Book -- A blatant commercial appeal to purchase the book on which this website is based.

6) Links and Resources -- Interesting and relevant websites, books, DVDs, and other media.

I welcome your comments, suggestions, and questions. You can e-mail me at 40plussports@gmail.com
