Welcome to 40plussports and best wishes for the holidays. his site is designed to encourage, inform, and entertain those over 40 who are contemplating arising from their couches and competing; or those who are already deeply committed to sports competition; or those who are somewhere in between -- the sometime weekend warrior.
WHAT'S NEW ON THE SITE
• It has been almost a year since I posted any content on the site, but this is not an apology. My work has been mostly offline. -- compiling data for 2014 which is beginning to go up and starting to write another book on Masters Sports. Also, my wife and I moved up to Maine for a year to help take care of our granddaughter. which interrupted my work but was a delightful break.
My competitive year was also short-circuited. I completed half a dozen local kayak races, competed in the Canoe and Kayak Marathon Nationals in Lock Haven, PA (finishing 3rd in my age group), and played lots of tennis (both singles and doubles). No One Hour Swim, no Crash-B Sprints, no triathlons or Orienteering meets. I plan to get more involved in these in the coming year.I've also qualified for the National Senior Games in Minneapolis this summer. I hope to see some of you there.
The weather here in New England has turned cold. I'll try to put up more postings this year...but no promises.
• I've described my experience at the 2013 World Masters Games in Turin, Italy and posted an article on the kayaking. Click on "The Aging Athlete" for my report.
• I've begun to post the results of the 2014 national championships for each sport. Just look for the "2015" next to the sports; those are the sports with the 2014 results. I am also in the process of updating the 2015 Calendars. Please be patient.
WHAT'S ON THE SITE
For those of you who are new to the site, here is an overview of the six sections
1) The Aging Athlete
-- My reflections on growing older as I compete in various sports.
2) Data Analysis
-- A page devoted to an examination of the data contained on the sports pages of this site. You'll find an Introduction to the Data
. At the bottom of the page you can access an article on Female Competitors in 2009 National Championships
and an article on Competitors over 70 in 2009 National Championships
-- A summary of articles and research on aging and sport performance that I have found provocative and informative.
-- A page for each of 27 sports which present a schedule for upcoming national championships, a list of the national champions in each sport, a list of the number of "competitors" in each event, and a summary table. Note: These tables are ONLY for competitors in the over-40 age group classes.
5) Buy the Book
-- A blatant commercial appeal to purchase the book on which this website is based.
6) Links and Resources
-- Interesting and relevant websites, books, DVDs, and other media. I've just added a link to Forever Athletes which has many of the same goals as this site.
